The Honey Badger Strategy: How to Build Financial Freedom When Times Are Tough

Complain about the tough times or control what’s in your hands. The choice is always yours.

Most of us fall into the default. Yup yup, times are tough. Who said it should be easy? The financial independence journey is not for the faint-hearted. One needs what I call the honey badger strategy. Confronting your situation head-on.

Honey badgers don’t avoid trouble; they move into trouble. This is my new philosophy after studying these weird-looking, no-nonsense creatures. I can’t help but admire their tenacious strength, resilience and fighting spirit.

The badger mindset is transitioning from being labour to being capital.

The Reality of Financial Independence: Why You Need a Honey Badger Mindset

The financial independence journey is hard, let’s not pretend; otherwise, everyone would be trying. Times are hard, but that’s not the gauge; what you do in tough times is what matters.

Most times, we are experts at defining problems. This is not as important as facing problems head-on like a badger.

Your debt doesn’t go away by talking about it, neither will you build a freedom fund by thinking about it. Thinking is easy; action is what matters and is hard, no fluff about it.

Yes, I hear unemployment is huge in South Africa, but if you work, you have something to work with. If you are unemployed reading this, you still have control; you can still search more, learn and improve your skills.

I agree, it is hard to find employment, but you need to meet your breakthrough prepared.

Attack Your Financial Problems: Debt and Emergency Funds

Face your issues head-on. When was the last time you put money aside, even R500? How about challenging yourself to improve your skills? Opportunities don’t wait for you.

Most people give up when times are tough, and the majority never dare to start. Starting could be your first effective strategy. It is the start that is hard.

As often said, the biggest form of defence is attack. I wish someone had told Bafana Bafana that in the Soccer World Cup. The honey badger understands this; that’s why it feasts on poisonous snakes.

If your debt or your emergency fund is giving you sleepless nights, no need to spend more energy planning. You might need to attack the debt monster and confront the silent lifestyle creep.

The very essence of resilience, either in the plains of the African savannah or in personal finance, health and life, is defined by tough times.

Yes, tough times are real, but you still have a responsibility to do something about it. You see, the honey badger faces the problem head-on, whereas most of us avoid problems.

Build Financial Systems to Beat Spending and Inertia

A solution is only valid if it can be implemented; otherwise, it’s just a good idea.

Investing or saving money is fighting impulses of spending everything today. The badger way is not to pretend the impulses are not there, but rather to create systems that beat complacency.

This is where your budget spreadsheet or your automation in your investment becomes a superpower. While most people rely on willpower to save and invest, you are on automatic.

Going to the gym or a healthy avocado toast is no longer something to consider but a weekly routine. A lot can be said about financial or life systems that work while you are not.

Increase Your Income: Skills, Side Hustles and Adaptation

Even learning new skills counts. By doing so, you are increasing the odds of a better job and more income. Side hustles are a good second option. Who said you should rely on a single income only?

Adaptation is another must-have badger skill, from fighting stings of bees in the hive to standing ground around bully lions.

The honey is sweeter than the painful stings; financial independence is hard to achieve, but control over one’s time is sweeter than a life that revolves around ringing alarms.

Take Action Towards Financial Freedom: Small Steps Matter

Yes, financial markets are unpredictable and the cost of living is going up. It’s all part of the process. Don’t be distracted by the noise.

What looks like money problems can result in creative thinking and yield freedom. Don’t underestimate your unused and unchallenged strength.

Today, take action towards your financial freedom. It doesn’t matter how small the action is; in fact, small is perfect.

Act out the good ideas in your head into life.

It’s spring season in South Africa. It’s time to spring up like the blooming new leaves.
